While Kline’s black-and-white abstractions, painted between 1950 and his death in 1962, have become hallmarks of modern art, scant attention has been paid to the artist’s Pennsylvania coal country roots. Robert S. Mattison, guest curator of the special exhibition Franz Kline: Coal and Steel and author of the accompanying catalog, identifies early influences on Kline's later, iconic works and traces the development of his vision from the rural-industrial landscape to the urban setting of Kline's numerous studios in New York.
